Welcome to the first artist album on Gilles Peterson's new Brownswood Recordings label – and one of the best albums you are about to hear in your life.

Still a relative newcomer, you may not have heard of him before now, but Ben Westbeech is a singer and producer likely to be in your ears for some time. Based in Bristol, an uncommonly fertile ground for new British sounds, Ben Westbeech is constantly pushing the boundaries and merging genres.

Ben Westbeech makes his very own kind of quirky, rough around the edges soul music. It’s not easy to categorise, but it’s what happens when a kid who was classically trained till aged 18 in cello, voice and piano grows up and gets into hip hop, dance music and sample-based beats. There’s something fresh and unusual about Ben’s productions and at the same time very accessible.

Intuitively musical, he builds tracks using a mix of samples and his own live playing, including piano and guitar, and largely recorded in his own bedroom. The result is beautifully listenable contemporary music.

Constantly working on new material, genuinely excited about new music, collaborations and ideas, this is a newcomer with a fresh sound, tonnes of energy and the talent to support it. It’s a pretty good start, we reckon – no wonder he feels ‘So Good Today’…
