...Ohio producer/emcee Fat Jon is a busy man. Besides putting in work as one-half of 3582 (with J Rawls), and laying beats for Five Deez, he's also collaborated with assorted crews and recorded an instrumental album for Mush Records. His latest exercise in sonic superiority comes in the form of Humanoid Erotica, recently released by Counterflow. Hip-hop has seen a growing number of producer albums hitting the shelves in the past year or so, and Jon's latest endeavor is ideal for discriminating heads always on the prowl for cool beats.
Complex but mellow, this record is on the background music/vibing out at home tip. Something you can listen to and try to figure out all the little nuances going on, or just let the bumps flow while you do your own thing. "14 Years" is spacey and blissed out, with thickly filtered atmospherics swirling around narcotic pianos and grimy snares, before evolving into a high-tech freak-out session towards the end. "No" comes with slow, jazzy sax riffs, subtle keys, and a simple but nice beat. "The Queen And I" picks up the pace a bit, with some hot rolling snares, deeeeeep bass tones, seductive whispering, and catchy keyboards. Drum-n-bass even gets the treatment on the excellent joint "I. Dee," flexing an array of skittering snares and trippy synths. Also clutch is the ear-tickling, mid-tempo jam "Exact Space," and "Change Your Mind," complete with wind chimes and a countdown from James Brown.
While the hip-hop world has been treated to many choice instrumental projects recently, from heavy-hitters like Pete Rock, Madlib, and MF Doom, Fat Jon further proves his skills and easily holds his own. With a fast-growing discography, numerous projects on deck, and records like this one, there's little doubt we'll be hearing from him for a long time to come. If you're a fan of high-quality beats and seriously smooth instrumentals, check for this joint pronto.
