Hyperdub's gradual re-configuration and re-contextualisation of synthfunk continues apace with this blinding twelve from Sara Abdel-Hamid's Ikonika project, bringing forward 8-bit machinations, overdriven synth arrangements and heavy heavy bass pads. "Sahara Michael" spans the a-side with its sharpened synth layers edging forward with a staggered kind of self restraint, sort of like a sped-up 8-bit death march intertwined with an alien p-funk alignment of broken keys and frayed synths dominating the mix. It's strangely propulsive and unfathomably heavy when played loud - something to do, no doubt, with the immaculately produced low-end elements anchoring the track with heaving bass weight you just can't argue with. "Fish" on the flipside extends the remit to imagine an altogether brighter variant, building on layered synths and strange yet addictive bittersweet melodies, bass notes and woodblock percussion to create a more anthemic vibe that should sit very well with steppy heads and peaktime players among you.
