Evolving from a one-man scratch machine to a seven-piece band, ‘Beatphreak’ are fast reaching the heights of their fellow ‘Raw Fusion’ and ‘Fat City’ funksters. After an impressive EP in late 2004 on the ‘Jack to Phono’ label, ‘Art of Soul’ is the groups’ debut release and it is all rather good. Featuring rasta MC ‘Kwasi Asante’ and soulstress ‘Laura Thistlethwaite’, this sassy jazz-dub collection is soul food for the lounge room. As it swings gracefully between tracks it is never short of a cheeky wink and will always keep your spirits high. With warm lazy beats and jazzy piano loops ‘Skadub’ takes to the mellow ground, whilst ‘She Can Love’ purrs gently alongside a cool bass line melody, leaving ‘Lil Hammond’ to bring the funk back to the dance floor with much style and finesse. From chilled house to stoned grooves to devilish funk, each track here exhibits great soul and depth and you just know they would translate brilliantly live. Strangely, for me, there weren’t any real heart stopping stand-outs, but for a debut, consistent and strong can actually mean a whole lot more. (inthemix)
