Following on from Ewan Pearson and Luciano's tenure, Alex Smoke is the latest artist to get his mitts on the Soma 'Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi' series - bringing a deep and dubby mix to the table that happily includes artists as diverse as Porn Sword Tobacco, Burial and Troy Pierce. Having released his own 'Paradolia' earlier this year, Smoke's profile is deservedly high; honing a sound that is opaque and shrouded, without leaving the listener out in the cold. Employing a similar ethos for his mix, Smoke opens with Porn Sword Tobacco's 'Najat Library', wherein creased atmospherics and a real sense of brooding are leaked into the dubstep throb of Burial's 'Gutted'. Despite being overtly juxtaposed, it is to Smoke's credit that the two tracks compliment one another with such aplomb - seeming both utterly natural and (more importantly) fantastically coherent. From here we're plunged deep into the chilly environs of Basic Channel and Model 500, before Smoke seeks to thaw the mood through the humid tones of Rhythm and Sound and Troy Pierces shiny '25 Bitches'. Smooth without becoming featureless, Smoke's mix revels in his talent to thread a coherent musical narrative throughout the diverse selections - allowing Thomas Brinkmann's 'Xenia' to massage straight into Claro Intelecto's 'Peace Of Mind' and 'Juan And Alex' by Musica Charlista. With a particular highlight being the closing triptych of Quixote, 2000 & One and Smoke's own 'Always And Forever', 'Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi. Vol. 3' is a rich and tasty journey through a delectable record box.
