"Protection" Drei Jahre nach ihrem Debüt "Blue Lines", das vom englischen Trendmagazin Face zum "Album des Jahres" gekürt wurde und den globalen Single-Bestseller "Unfinished Sympathy" hervorbrachte, meldeten sich Massive Attack 1994 mit einem Paukenschlag im Rampenlicht zurück. Das Kreativ-Trio hatte mit seinem wegweisenden Debüt den Grundstein für die TripHop-Bewegung gelegt, und Protection sorgte drei Jahre später für verstärkte Breitenwirkung. Mit ihrer Fusion aus HipHop-Drums, be-soultem Gesang, "ragga riddims", Dub-Elementen und atmospärischen, geradezu kinematographischen Keyboardsounds gab die Bristol-Band die Marschroute für die Dance Music in der zweiten Hälfte der neunziger Jahre vor. Die stilbildende, von Nellee Hooper (Soul II Soul)produzierte CD ebnete den Weg für nachfolgende Acts wie Portishead, Sneaker Pimps oder auch Beth Orton.
