The folks at Numero are clearly used to trawling through the archives, but the assemblage of this album sounds like an absolute nightmare. There's quite a story associated with the acquisition of the Tap Records archive, formerly owned by Jeremiah Yisrael, involving all manner of awkward wrangling and sifting through mouldy spools of tape. By the time they got the spore-ridden masters back to Numero HQ, they were apparently in a right state. Fortunately, you'd never really know that from the quality of the tracks as they appear on this collection. As ever, the Numero restoration job is impeccable. Highlights on the compilation come from Tap lynchpins Arnie Love and The Lovettes, the simply superb old school rap of Fabulous 3 MCs' 'Rub A Dub Dub' and the various contributions by disco diva Jackie Stoudemire, whose 'Invisible Wind' formerly reissued as a 12" by the label, appears in its original form as well as an Arnie Love & The Lovettes recording. It's a pretty awesome late-period disco cut, but given how often the title gets sung, you will find yourself agitated by the writer feeling the need to point out that the motion of air currents is in fact not ordinarily a visual phenomenon (blizzards and sandstorms don't count in my book). Still, it's a great arrangement, and there's not really anything else bad you could say about it. Apparently amongst the rest of this decaying bounty the Numero boffins dug up an LP transfer of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska (which needless to say, is not included here). Sounds like quite the treasure trove.
