Following the groundbreaking debut LP from Cannibal Ox, Def Jux come forth with this crushing new EP from Mush affiliates Aesop Rock. Under the guidance of El-P, Aesop will stand even taller with the release of this 12" and the September due album Labor Days. Coma lets the dense poetics ride over a blinding low riding swamp funk groove from Omega One. The exclusive b-side Maintenence reunites Aes with Float co-producer Blockhead. It's a squashed killer, with stop start cut up beats and another testifying performance from Aesop. Def Jux are just as important as Anticon but there is a difference : where Sole and the crew reduce and build, El-P and Antipop dive head first into complex vocalising and pin point / laboured original beats and rhythm patterns that swing in a way that has not really been associated with hip hop so far. Devestating.
